Chartered on April 19, 1947 at what was then Hampton Institute, the Beta Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated has spent over seven decades building a tradition of excellence, service, and brotherhood on the campus of Hampton University.
Known as “The Monster by the Sea,” Beta Chi has produced leaders across every sector—law, medicine, business, public service, and the arts—who carry the values of Kappa Alpha Psi into their professional and civic lives.
Beta Chi is one of the most recognized undergraduate chapters in the Eastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi, maintaining a standard of excellence recognized at the university, provincial, and national levels.

Beta Chi alumni established the KapEx Foundation to financially support undergraduate members and award scholarships to Hampton University students.
Inaugural host of the Pirate Tank entrepreneurship event with Hampton's Business Dept. The Dennis A. Patterson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually through KapEx.
Beta Chi was named the I.W.E. Taylor Undergraduate Chapter of the Year at the 2023 Eastern Province Council — the highest chapter honor awarded at the provincial level.
Brother Gary Hunter was named Chapter Advisor of the Year at the 2023 Eastern Province Council — recognizing over 16 years of dedicated service guiding Beta Chi to provincial and national excellence.
Beta Chi received the William Henry Greene Undergraduate Achievement Award at the 2023 Eastern Province Council, recognizing sustained excellence in service, academics, and fraternal achievement.
Brother Trajan Baker earned 1st Place Gold in the James Overton Academic Achievement Award at the 2023 Eastern Province Council — the top individual academic honor at the provincial level.

The KapEx Foundation is the alumni-driven nonprofit established by Beta Chi brothers in 2022 to invest in undergraduate excellence and community impact. KapEx exists to extend the chapter's commitment to achievement beyond the yard and into the broader community.
Through scholarships, programming, and strategic partnerships—including the Pirate Tank entrepreneurship competition co-hosted with Hampton University's Business Department—KapEx bridges the gap between the rich legacy of Beta Chi alumni and the undergraduates who carry that legacy forward.
The Dennis A. Patterson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to brothers who demonstrate distinguished service to Beta Chi, Kappa Alpha Psi, and their communities.
